About the department

Digital innovation and transformation is where digital technology is used to make new products, services, and business models to transform the nature of an organisation or entire industry. Business processes underlie such transformations and rely on strong supply chains. Our department combines the study of information systems, information management, business analytics, and operations and supply chain management.

Welcome to the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management (ISOM).

In the 2016 QS World University Rankings for the subject Computer Science and Information Systems, the University of Auckland was ranked amongst the top 100 departments in the world and our MCom in Operations and Supply Chain Management was ranked 44th in the world by Eduniversal. This means that ISOM is one of the leading departments in the Asia-Pacific region. The full list of rankings is available from the QS World University Rankings website.

The department has strong links with industry partners such as Microsoft, SAP, Ports of Auckland, and many others. Our information systems and operations and supply chain graduates are sought after by leading international and New Zealand firms.

The Information Systems major offered by the ISOM department is also the first and only program in New Zealand to receive academic recognition and certification from The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIIBA®).

Two of our OM students won first prize in the 3rd annual Lufthansa case challenge in 2012. Competing against 104 teams from around the world, they were asked to develop innovation concepts about how Lufthansa can benefit from new business opportunities. They were flown to Germany by Lufthansa and presented their ideas to Lufthansa top-management and professors from EBS Business School.

In 2014 a team of students majoring in Information Systems and Computer Science won the $50,000 first prize in the Innovation category at the Microsoft Imagine Cup finals in Seattle. The Microsoft Imagine Cup is the world’s premier student technology competition, and attracts entries from the world’s top universities. With leadership provided by ISOM, many times the University of Auckland has had a team placed in the finals of the Imagine Cup.

The mission of the Department is “to be one of Asia-Pacific’s foremost departments of information systems and operations and supply chain management, known for the relevance and impact of our research and scholarship and recognized for the quality of our people, our programmes, our teaching and our partnerships.” We invite you to join us in this mission.
