Why study Operations Management?
Operations and Supply Chain Management deals with understanding and integrating business processes within and between organisations. If you are interested in this subject you can study it at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Studying Operations and Supply Chain Management will enable you to solve complex business problems related to the journey of products and services from the manufacturer or provider to the end customer.
You will gain an understanding of the techniques required for managing and improving the integration of design, resources, processes and customer requirements.
This subject includes topics in operations management, business process design, supply chain management, business logistics, production planning and scheduling, and quality management.
When you study at postgraduate level you will look at the design, management and improvement of processes, systems and networks for use within and between organisations. Areas of research include manufacturing and service systems modelling, quality management, supply chain modeling and coordination, systems thinking and health care delivery.
Depending on whether you complete an undergraduate or postgraduate degree you could work as an operations analyst/consultant/manager, business process engineer, production and scheduling planner/manager, quality manager, ERP consultant, supply chain consultant or change manager.
Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)
The BCom offers Operations and Supply Chain Management as a single major or as a double major alongside one of the other majors offered within the BCom such as information systems, marketing, accounting or finance. You can also study the Bachelor of Commerce in Operations and Supply Chain Management as part of a conjoint degree programme where you study for two degrees at once.
Bachelor of Commerce (Honours)
The BCom (Hons) one fulltime year of postgraduate study following the Bachelor of Commerce degree. Entry is by invitation only and is based on superior grades in the subject area.
Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (PGDipCom)
This postgraduate diploma consists of one fulltime year of postgraduate coursework following the Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Master of Commerce (MCom)
The MCom degree is a two-year postgraduate programme. The first year is course work, which may be taken as bachelor honours, while the second year comprises a research thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
As a general rule you need to have successfully completed either a bachelor honours degree or masters degree to be eligible to study for a PhD in Operations and Supply Chain Management.
