Business School
New Zealand Leadership Institute
In 2003 the Business School joined with a group of enlightened national organisations to launch the New Zealand Leadership Institute in an innovative partnership committed to lifting the quality of leadership in New Zealand.
Since its inception, the partners of the New Zealand Leadership Institute have included Westpac, Deloitte, Hudson, DB Breweries, the Cawthron Trust, Bell Gully, Sleepyhead, the Tindall Foundation and Woolf Fisher Trust. These partners are unanimous in their belief that greater understanding about leadership and the development of high-quality leadership in our organisations and communities can bridge the gap between our country’s aspirations and attaining exceptional achievement in all walks of life.
The New Zealand Leadership Institute, which has the standing of a University-level research centre, is New Zealand’s first fully integrated leadership research and leadership development centre.
The faculty involved in the New Zealand Leadership Institute seek to bring a fresh, Antipodean perspective to leadership research, finding out what leadership looks like on the ground when stripped away from its rhetoric. Among other areas, their research interests include the role of authenticity in leadership, the relationship between leadership and management, the nature of cross-cultural leadership, and the design of leadership development.
The core research is undertaken by Dr Brigid Carroll, Professor Brad Jackson and Dr Lester Levy. Dr Brigid Carroll (Management and International Business) is a Principal Researcher in the Institute whose publications have appeared in such leading international journals as Organization and Organization Studies.
Professor Brad Jackson (Management and International Business) is the Fletcher Building Education Trust Professor of Leadership. His books include Management Gurus and Management Fashions (Routledge, 2001) and, with Eric Guthey and Timothy Clark, Demystifying Business Celebrity (Routledge, 2009). Dr Lester Levy is Adjunct Professor of Leadership at The University of Auckland Business School and author of Leadership and the Whirlpool Effect (Penguin, 1999).
