A recently retired Elam School of Fine Arts lecturer in photography, John B Turner is now living in Beijing, making his own photographs and continuing his research into the work of New Zealanders who have photographed in China, such as Tom Hutchins (1956), Brian Brake (1957, 1959 etc.) and Rewi Alley.
This display, based on his recent Elam exhibition as a part of the Auckland Festival of Photography 2012, is a personal response to travelling on the Beijing Subway, and his introduction to rural China in Hebei Province. The print display will be accompanied by a digital slide show of more of Turner’s China photographs and a selection from Tom Hutchins’ relatively unknown 1956 essay.
Turner’s photographs can be viewed following his presentation and will be on display until 16 September 2012.
This photo display is dedicated to the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between New Zealand and the People’s Republic of China.
