MBA FAQs

We have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions to assist you in making your decision.

Q. What is the difference between the two MBA study clusters?
A. The Auckland MBA pathway is favoured by managers aged around 30-35 who have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Business with a B+ or better. The programme is taught two nights per week. Students normally live within approximately 50 kms of the Business School.

The Executive MBA pathway is favoured by senior managers aged around 35-50 who are direct entry MBA students. The programme is delivered in block form, on a Friday or Saturday every second week. The weekend block format enables students from throughout New Zealand to attend.

Q. Scholarships
A. There are no scholarships currently available for students.

Q. When can I start?
A. There is one entry point per year – Quarter 1 January of each year. Refer to our Important dates calendar.

Q. Can I get a student loan?
A. Yes, as long as you are studying at least 30 points (MBA/MMgt) in the calendar year, you are eligible for an interest-free loan for tuition fees.

For more information and to apply for a loan, visit our Student Loans and Allowances website page

Q. Are all students eligible for student loans?
A. Only New Zealand citizens and permanent residents are eligible for a student loan.

Q. Can I study for an MBA or MMgt or PGDipBus full-time?
A. All our qualifications are designed for working professionals with classes delivered in the evenings and/or weekends. We believe it is important that our students are active practitioners so that they can bring their real-world experience into the classroom, and take their classroom learning straight out into the workplace.

Q. Can I cross-credit courses to my Postgraduate Diploma or Masters study?
A. The regulations of The University of Auckland do not permit any cross-credits or exemptions to Postgraduate or Masters level programmes.

Q. What happens if I fail a course?
A. If you fail a course, you will have one chance to re-sit.

Q. What happens if I get ill or am unable to continue with my studies for a period of time?
A. If you become ill or have compelling reasons for temporarily suspending your MBA, the Director of Academic Programmes is authorised to allow you, at his discretion, one opportunity to suspend your course of studies for a maximum period of one year.

Q. Who can I contact for more information?
A. Please contact our MBA Programme Manager Donovan Breunig.
