PhD Student Representatives for 2014: Torsten Schmidts, Mariaelena Huambachano and Gerry Liang

The Business School has three new PhD Student Representatives for 2014: Torsten Schmidts, Mariaelena Huambachano and Gerry Liang.

Torsten is a PhD candidate in the Department of Management and International Business, supervised by Deb Shepherd. His research explores how social capital in family-owned businesses is transferred within and across generations. Torsten has previously worked in Management Consultancy in Germany. His interests include squash, reading and travelling.

Mariaelena is a PhD candidate in the Department of Management and International Business, supervised by Professor Nigel Haworth and Dr Rachel Wolfgramm. Her research explores food security and Indigenous peoples.  In particular, she is interested in how Indigenous peoples of Peru and New Zealand’s "good living" philosophies can contribute to improving food security. Mariaelena has previously worked at the Tertiary Education Commission in New Zealand. Her interests include volleyball, running and travelling.

Gerry is a PhD candidate in the Department of Property. His main supervisor is Senior Lecturer Dr Zhi Dong and his co-supervisor is Professor Laurence Murphy. Gerry’s PhD research looks at the impact of regulatory regimes on real estate investment trusts (known as listed property trusts in New Zealand) in relation to their financial disclosure behaviour. Gerry’s research interests also include real estate finance, real estate valuation and housing prices. Gerry is open to any comments and suggestions about his research. He looks forward to any research collaboration opportunities and discussions with scholars in both his discipline of real estate (property) and other business and economics fields, such as accounting, finance, econometrics and economics.

All three of our reps have recently passed their provisional year review and are familiar with the day-to-day operations and processes of the PhD programme, both within the Business School and the central University. Please feel free to get in touch with them if you have any questions, concerns or comments about being a PhD student in the Business School.
