Education has always been something held dear by Bryce Barnett, Managing Director of KCL Property.

“This Department of Property has our industry’s future in its hands. I am wholeheartedly behind what they are doing and the resulting high quality graduates they are providing us with.”

To formalise that commitment, KCL Property sponsored the inaugural Property Student of the Year awards and also set up a research fund for academic study.

Competition for the prize was stiff. Thirteen hopefuls applied, each presenting a 500-word essay and taking part in a 30-minute interview with the judging panel. At the culmination of that, six went through to give a five-minute presentation on their essay topic in front of KCL executives, family and student colleagues.

What really struck Barnett was the attitude and professionalism of the students.

“You hear such dreadful things about ‘Millennials’, and the new generations coming through. So my stereotypes, and those of my colleagues, were just blown away. These students were amazing – engaged with their community, wanting to challenge themselves, getting great marks and were just thoroughly lovely people. It was the best day of my life… I got a real buzz from meeting them.”

At the conclusion of a gruelling day, Shahyad Asdollah-Zadeh won the top prize of $3,000 and work experience with KCL Property, and runner-up Jasmine Yao won $1,000. However, all the competitors were winners as KCL executives agreed to mentor the students in their final year of study.

Barnett says KCL Property is pleased to be on board as a Business School supporter. “As the leader in property degrees, The University of Auckland Business School boasts extremely high work ethics and social ethics. Everyone has a vision and is motivated.”

Property Head of Department Associate Professor Deborah Levy says KCL Property’s support is invaluable to the department, which is small by University standards but offers a unique culture between staff and students as a result.
