One of the first recipients of the University of Auckland Business School Dean's Asia Scholarships says it has been “life changing”, as she prepares for her final examinations.

Jing Sun was born and raised in the “laid back” Qinghai Province which borders Tibet and, like New Zealand, boasts a pure environment with a largely agricultural-based economy. She decided to investigate New Zealand university scholarships while in her second year at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in the Sichuan Province in China.

New Zealand offered Jing a world-class tertiary education and the ability to enjoy her passion for outdoor activities, which include windsurfing, skiing, tramping and skydiving.

She counts herself "lucky to find" the Dean's Asia Scholarship, because at the time of her research it was only seven days from closing.

"I could not have studied at such a prestigious university without the assistance and support from the Business School. It's been lovely."

Jing, majoring in commercial law and accounting, has lined up a job with global finance company BDO and starts as a Business Adviser in March. She plans to make New Zealand her permanent home.

"If I stayed in China, I would have graduated and got a job in a local bank in Sichuan and stayed there for the rest of my life - so my life would be quite different.

"At first I was kind of scared of being alone in a foreign land, but it wasn't difficult to make friends. I love the people. Kiwis are the nicest."

The Dean's Asia Scholarship pays up to three years international undergraduate student fees to complete a Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Property degree at the University of Auckland Business School.

Selection is based on academic merit, financial need and demonstrated potential to succeed in business studies at university. To help the Business School provide more Dean’s Asia Scholarships, please donate via the Giving to Auckland website.
