Business School students to receive 2011 NZ Universities Blues awards

Six students from The University of Auckland Business School have been awarded NZ Universities Blues awards for their academic and sporting performances in 2010.

The Blues awards are considered New Zealand’s most prestigious sports awards for university students, recognising an athlete’s commitment and excellence to their sport as well as to their studies. The strict eligibility criteria for the award includes passing national qualifying standards for the relevant sport as well as passing a minimum number of academic classes.

“The NZ University Blues Awards are a deserved recognition of some of the country’s elite athletes who not only excel in their sport but are equally committed to furthering their education,” says Louis Rattray, Director for Sport and Recreation at The University of Auckland.

“The University is proud of the successes of all the award winners who study here and I hope to personally congratulate them all, in the near future.”

The Business School have the highest number of students from the University with the other two recipients coming from the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.

Business School Dean Professor Greg Whittred comments “I am continually reminded by CEO’s and business leaders of the importance of a commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom. It is a genuine pleasure to be able to recognise and celebrate the achievements of this group of young leaders.”

The six students from the Business School are:

  • Elizabeth Lamb – Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science Conjoint (Athletics).
  • James Eunson – Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science Conjoint (Badminton).
  • Teneale Hatton – Bachelor of Commerce (Canoe/Kayaking).
  • Matthew Palmer – Bachelor of Commerce (Gymnastics).
  • Phillip Xiao – Bachelor of Commerce/Graduate Diploma in Commerce (Table Tennis).
  • Andrea Anacan – Bachelor of Business and Information Management (Karate). Andrea will also receive an award for Outstanding Performance.

The awards will be presented at the Intercontinental Hotel in Wellington on 1 July.
