GS1 New Zealand CEO Dr Peter Stevens talked about what many are calling the “new normal” of supply chain visibility in the global economy during his presentation at the Business School in March.

His presentation, “Dude, where’s my stuff?”, was co-hosted by GS1 and the New Zealand RFID Pathfinder Group and attracted a large audience.

Dr Stevens explained how the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is responding to the challenge of supply chain invisibility and what implications this could have for New Zealand.

APEC has been drafting a strategy to improve supply chain visibility, which is expected to use a standardised interface between individual systems in the supply chain to share cargo information among customs authorities, customs agents, manufacturers, importers and logistics operators.

The new strategy is mooting the use of Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPC-IS) as the preferred technology candidate for a visualisation base to provide improved visibility.
