Business School professor joins Marketing Hall of Fame

More than 700 seasoned marketers cheered Professor Rod Brodie on last night as he was inducted into the New Zealand Marketing Hall of Fame at the TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Awards.

The head of the Department of Marketing now joins five of his marketing colleagues in the Hall of Fame, with Associate Professor Richard Brookes, Mike Groves, David Innes, Tom Agee and Steve Bridges already members of the exclusive club.

Rod was recognised for his commitment and contribution to the marketing profession in New Zealand and internationally since joining The University of Auckland in 1988 as Professor of Marketing and Head of Department.

Fellow Hall of Fame member Mike Groves introduced Professor Brodie at the awards function, telling of his ambition to build the best marketing department in Australasia that excelled in all areas that are important to a university.

“Rod has succeeded brilliantly in bringing all these goals to fruition, but he has done much more than that. He is himself a researcher of world renown who has published a remarkable total of 80 articles in refereed journals, contributed to nine book chapters and supervised 40 theses,” Mike says.

“He has won a host of international accolades including being on the editorial board of the Journal of Marketing and being the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to be elected a Fellow of the European Marketing Academy. Just yesterday, he received confirmation that he has Fellowship status in the Chartered Institute of Marketing.”

Rod completed a PhD in marketing in 1982, at a time when marketing was hardly recognised as an academic discipline, and was still in its infancy as a business discipline.

“Through his research, teaching and leadership, Rod has contributed hugely to the marketing profession, to the great benefit of our economy. He has always had a specific interest in market research and has contributed strongly to the acceptance and understanding of market research,” Mike says.

Rod has also played an active role as an expert witness, contributing to more than 50 legal cases.

“He is a natural and superb leader. Over the years he has mentored numerous staff and students who have gone on to excel locally and internationally. He has instinctively drawn the best out them, encouraged them to be the best they can be and has celebrated their successes genuinely and unselfishly.”
