Chinese companies have been internationalising rapidly, not only through exports but increasingly through foreign direct investment including a huge increase in acquisitions overseas. These trends are now confronted by the rise of nationalism and a backlash against globalisation in many parts of the world.

Based on his work with dozens of Chinese companies, Professor Peter Williamson will discuss the motivations for this rapid internationalisation by Chinese companies and to what extent it reflects existing competitive advantage versus hubris. He will then go on to discuss what this might mean for the future competitiveness of Chinese companies; the implications for multinationals competing with the Chinese both within China and globally; and the likely impacts on host country recipients of Chinese investment and their possible responses.
