Academic skills support

ILT supports academic skills, communication and capability development.

The Academic Skills Team complements the work of academic staff by developing resources to ensure students acquire threshold concepts, academic skills and capabilities.

We can help with:

  • Resources: Learning Hub is an online hub consisting of materials and resources to support academic skills development
  • Building specific learning objects: We can work with academic staff to build online resources to embed in courses

Student support

The Academic Skills Team provides support to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Business School. A range of workshops and support services are offered throughout the semester, and are planned and delivered in consultation with academic staff.

Online support

The Learning Hub offers access to a wide range of resources to support learning. The online resource provides academic skills modules on study skills, deconstructing your assignment tasks, academic reading and writing skills that target the needs of first year Business students.

Workshops

The Academic Skills Team offers weekly workshops linked to the first-year core papers. The workshops focus on academic skills such as essay writing, reading effectively, deconstructing assignment questions, exam and test preparation and more. Log on to the Learning Hub to find out what's on each week and sign up.

One-to-one support

One-to-one support is offered Monday to Friday between 12 and 2pm in the red booths on Level 1 of the Sir Owen G Glenn Building (OGGB), 12 Grafton Road.

You may drop in during these hours with any queries related to academic skills. For example, you can ask questions about study skills, time management or feedback on your essay writing. Specialist staff and Learning Leaders will give you personalised support. No appointment is necessary.

Learning Leaders

Learning Leaders are volunteer Business School student mentors who provide guidance and support to first year students by sharing successful learning and study strategies. They participate in a number of activities such as the Learning Hub skills conference, orientation, academic skills workshops, face-to-face support and boot camps.
