Meet Janelle Danielson

Janelle Danielson completed a conjoint Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Accounting) and Bachelor of Laws. She works as a Graduate Finance Analyst at BNZ.

A conjoint degree in Commerce and Law has given Janelle Danielson a broad foundation to kick-start her career.

She encourages Business School students to study the subjects they enjoy and not limit themselves to one discipline.

“We don’t know what kinds of careers will pop up as we get older. Put yourself into a position where you’re going to study something that interests you, that you’re passionate about, but will give you transferable skills that you can use in a range of careers.

“I’ve used both my Law and Commerce degrees to get where I am today.”

While she was studying, Janelle was awarded the CPA and BNZ Māori and Pacific Scholarship, which included a two-month summer internship with BNZ.

“It was awesome, it gave me a huge insight into what it’s like to work in accounting. I learned which skills I needed to work on, and which skills were really useful. I got to meet a lot of people throughout the whole business and at the end of the internship they offered me a position in their graduate programme, which I happily accepted.”

As a Graduate Finance Analyst, Janelle works with stakeholders right across the business, performing reconciliations and using a variety of systems.

“There’s a lot of interaction with real life – things on the news, what’s happening in the dairy industry, what’s happening overseas.”

On top of her studies, Janelle was Treasurer for the Pacific Islands Law Students Association, a UniGuide, a mentor for the PolyCation programme at Auckland Girls Grammar School, and a facilitator helping to prepare Year 13 Pasifika students for university.

“One of my aspirations is to create a Pasifika financial literacy programme. Financial literacy is something I’m deeply passionate about and I want to increase that knowledge within the Pasifika community and expand into other communities too.”
